Hands-on Skill Development in Divorce Practice for Mediators

This 24 hour course is designed for mediators who are interested in the practice of divorce mediation. The training integrates substantive information with practice through interactive roleplay experience.

Prerequisite: 30-hour Basic Mediation Training.

Topics covered in Divorce Mediation Training

I. Overview of Divorce & Parenting Issues
The complexity of divorce: legal and psychological aspects. Co-parenting plans and their impact on the children. Relevant Massachusetts law.

II. Alimony & Property Division plus
Same Sex & Unmarried Couples

Review of statute, case law, and practice regarding spousal support and the equitable division of the marital estate, including new alimony statute. In addition, mediation for same sex and unmarried couples. Impact of Goodridge case.

III. Child Support & Related Financial Issues
Child support guidelines and related financial issues. Introducing and managing legal and financial planning choices in the mediation session.

IV. Reaching Closure
Drafting final product. Challenging issues.
Ethical and practice dilemmas.
