2023 Community Peacemaker Honorees
The student peer mediators at Acera: The Massachusetts School of Science and Creativity
“Ever since the Peer Mediation training, I’ve been fighting less with my sister.” - Acera 7th grade Peer Mediator
Our Community Peacemaker Honoree was the student Peer Mediators at Acera: The Massachusetts School of Science and Creativity. The inaugural class of 21 students (grades 5-8) completed their mediation training through CDSC in March 2023. By the end of the school year they had had 12 conflicts referred to mediation, and started outreach initiatives to spread the good word about mediation to their peers. These Peer Mediators serve as leaders and conflict resolution ambassadors in their community. Collectively, the students help their peers resolve conflicts in a constructive way, build more understanding between students, and promote a more peaceful, positive school environment.
They have used their creativity in sharing mediation with their peers and creating their own roleplay demonstrations in classrooms. We look forward to working with the mediators as they continue to grow in the years to come.
What other 7th grade peer mediators say about their roles and the program impact:
➣“I learned how to create safe spaces with my words, and how to reflect other people’s feelings with more clarity and non-bias.”
➣“A lot of the skills we learned in the training can help us solve our own conflicts and not just other people's.”
